About Lucas Island Services

Over 10 years ago we, Inge and Erna, decided to give living and working in Tenerife a go. Through the numerous years spent in Tenerife, we have gained a tremendous amount of experience as an interpreter/translator, a tour guide/travel guide and teaching Spanish language lessons.

In addition to this vast work experience, we have also gathered a great deal of knowledge regarding both Spanish and local culture. We know the ins and outs of the island, and especially where to find the unique spots.

Now we aim to share our experiences with others as well as connect people to this rich culture. With Lucas Island Services, we support those who have taken the leap to live in Tenerife. With our extensive expertise in living, working and enjoying life in Tenerife, we can ease your entry into island life.

Services

We are here to support you with all the practical matters required for settling into Tenerife smoothly.

In addition, we can utilise our own knowledge and experience to familiarise you in Spanish society and culture. This includes, but is not limited to, tasks such as housing, taxes, administration, schools and registration. Do you need to arrange something with a specific authority but have not yet mastered the Spanish language to the level required? We are happy to accompany you as a translator.
We can also assist you with any interactions with a medical institution. The medical field and the specific terms associated are familiar to us. With the help of our translations, you’ll be both understood and able to understand the medical advice provided.

Would you like to learn Spanish? No problem, we also offer Spanish language lessons. We have both private classes and group classes that you could take with family or friends. Finally, you can also join our ‘Walk & Talk’. During this lesson, we take a nice walk and focus on speaking the Spanish language.

Important things to know before living and working in Tenerife

Before you move to Tenerife for a short or longer period, there are a few useful things to keep in mind. This is a list of some of the things you need to know before moving to Tenerife.

  • Since the Canary Islands are a part of Spain, and therefore also a part of the European Union, you don’t need to apply for residency or a work permit if you are a resident of the EU. (For UK residents please check www.gov.uk for updated information regarding living and working in Tenerife). But as a EU resident, if you would like to live in Tenerife for more than 3 months, you must register at the ayuntamiento (town hall). You will receive an empadronamiento (proof of registration). You will need this proof to apply for a NIE. A NIE is your personal registration and identification number. With a NIE you can also apply for a bank account and buy property .
  • When you work in Spain, you automatically receive basic insurance, known as Seguridad Social. In addition to this, it is possible to take out private insurance. This is not mandatory, but is recommended.
  • If you intend to live in Tenerife, you can choose between a short or long-term rental home, or an owner-occupied apartment or home. Since this is a very extensive decision and dependent on your subjective preferences, we are happy to arrange a personal conversation to provide advice and discuss the matter further.
  • Working in Tenerife can be a bit more difficult given the high unemployment rate, especially now following the COVID-19 crisis. That is why we wish to advise you of this from the start.
If you intend to start a business on Tenerife, Lucas Island Services can put you in touch with a “gestor” who can help you to arrange all the necessary administrative, legal and tax matters. Keep in mind that Spain is a highly bureaucratic country and so English is in limited use. The gestor will remove a lot of the ‘red tape’, irritation and waiting from your hands.
  • If you’d like to enjoy your pension or simply spend the winter in Tenerife, there are various options. By not working or living permanently in Tenerife, different rules are applicable. Make sure you are well informed of these in advance to avoid any nasty surprises later. Lucas Island Services can assist you with this.

On this page you can find more island information and things we can help you with.
